Kargi is a desolate, quiet and small island in the vast blue of the Aegean Sea, but exciting enough to make your heart pound when you see it.
Kargi Island is an uninhabited island located only 500 meters away from Akyarlar, which fascinates people with its nature, history and beauties. The distance between Akyarlar and Kos, one of the Greek islands closest to Anatolia, is approximately 4.5 kilometers. Therefore, when you visit Kargi Island, you will meet the closest piece of land to Greece in the region.
It's like straight out of a fairy tale
The feature that gives the island its name is the presence of pike-like rocks rising from the ground to the sky on the shore of the island. Perhaps there are those among us who do not know the dictionary meaning of the word "kargi": Kargi means long reed-reed that grows in places such as lake shores. However, when we look at its more common use, it is the name given to the long and pointed spear with an iron tip used by armies in ancient and medieval times.
Indeed, the 2-3 meter sharp rocks on the Kargi coast resemble the warriors of the mythological age waiting with their spears in their hands when viewed from afar.
Kargi Island is approximately 1.5 hours away from Bodrum. Therefore, it is at an ideal distance for transportation by yacht or sailboat from the center of Bodrum. The size of the island is 2.1 hectares, approximately 21.000 m2. Since it is a small and rocky island, there is also a lighthouse on the island in order not to cause marine accidents. The surface of the island is in the shape of a steep hill, and it is covered with green bushes unique to the Aegean, which we call maquis vegetation. This green cover allows you to rest your eyes as you spend time around the island.
Ideal for diving
Especially the land-facing side of Kargi Island is ideal for diving. There are also amphorae at the bottom of the sea towards Kos Island. These amphorae at a depth of 5 to 25 meters are dated to AD. It belongs to Roman shipwrecks from the 4th century. The rock formations of the island extend to a depth of 36 meters.
The island and its surroundings offer a rich habitat for underwater creatures. The island's cliffs are a safe habitat for large herds. The current around the island makes the sea nutritious for fish. For this reason, it is possible to come across herds of moray eel, grouper, denmark, lagos and barracuda.
If you want to try Kargi Island for diving, we recommend that you pay attention to the current in the direction of Kos Island.
