Butterfly Valley

It may seem improbable, but hidden paradises still exist globally, and Turkey is home to one of them. Butterfly Valley serves as a tangible testament, illustrating that a lifestyle harmonious with nature is indeed achievable.
Nestled between mountains reaching 350 meters in height, adorned with endemic plant species, Butterfly Valley unfolds a haven featuring a 50-meter high waterfall. This distinctive ecosystem hosts over 80 butterfly species in harmony. The turquoise sea meets golden sands in this unspoiled bay, untouched by concrete structures and unreachable by highways. Butterfly Valley stands as an unparalleled paradise.
We are fortunate to have a treasure of immense beauty like Butterfly Valley in Turkey. Our good fortune extends to those few individuals who valiantly opposed the interests of the concrete lobby, preserving Butterfly Valley in its natural state. Presently, designated as a Grade 1 protected area, its sea, beach, mountains, and in essence, its unparalleled beauty, are accessible to all.

Impossible to describe in words

Not too long ago, approximately 30 years in the past, Butterfly Valley existed as a scarcely known legend its existence debated and shared primarily through word of mouth. Describing the geography of this place is truly challenging. Perhaps envisioning it as akin to being in the setting of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie could offer a more tangible image. Nestled amidst 350-meter high, sheer slopes, this valley is situated within the boundaries of the Ölüdeniz town in the Fethiye district. Sailing south from Ölüdeniz by boat, Butterfly Valley graciously unfolds in the initial expansive bay following the Blue Cave.

From Güdürümsu to Butterfly Valley

Prior to the 1980s, Butterfly Valley bore the name Güdürümsu Bay and was familiar only to the local residents. Upon visiting the area, photographer Rıfat Kılar, captivated by the butterflies, bestowed the valley with the name Butterfly Valley. This designation, the most fitting to convey the region's beauty, gained global recognition and became the widely acknowledged title for the valley.

Waterfall, a source of life for butterflies

The origin of the waterfall in Butterfly Valley lies within the boundaries of the Faralya neighborhood, previously recognized as Uzunyurt. The stream emerging from this source meanders through the rocks, nurturing lavender flowers, chaste trees, and oleanders within the valley. This unique ecosystem, centered around the waterfall, becomes the habitat for over 80 butterfly species. The mountains, resembling a protective barrier, shield the butterflies from winds and create an optimal climate. Among these butterfly species, the most notable is the tiger butterfly. While tiger butterflies can be found in various parts of the world, in Butterfly Valley, they form colonies, a distinctive feature not prevalent in many other locations. As you move from the coast deeper into the valley and get closer to the waterfall, butterflies surround you, and if you are very lucky, you even witness butterflies landing on you. This is called a butterfly kiss.

Accommodation in the valley

Overnight accommodation is available in the valley, offering the option for individuals to set up their own tents. Alternatively, there are eco-friendly tourism establishments providing various solutions. These businesses offer tent rentals, comfortable glamping tents, and bungalows. Meals are provided in the morning and evening, with a fish restaurant located at the beach's end and a snack buffet for lunch. For immediate necessities, there's also a mini-market on-site. In essence, there is a level of comfort available here, all within the parameters of naturalness. It's an experience that many of us dream of having, isn't it?

Hike from the beach deep into the valley

Upon visiting Butterfly Valley, whether for a day trip or an extended stay, make sure to stroll through the valley, passing by the tents and hammocks where nature enthusiasts immerse themselves in books. Venture further into the valley, and don't fret about the heat; the trees' shade provides ample protection. Upon reaching the valley's depths, you'll encounter a small pond. Climbing the rocks here will lead you to the waterfall. There are ropes on the rocks to make climbing easier. However, we do not recommend climbing as it can be dangerous and you may disturb the butterflies. By the way, during the summer months, the water is very low, so if you insist and climb the waterfall, you may be disappointed. But rest assured, the view that will greet you will take away all your tiredness.

The climate is beautiful in all seasons

Even in the summer months, the scorching Mediterranean climate doesn't impact Butterfly Valley, thanks to the continuous nightly airflow down the mountain. Throughout the day, guests in the valley are refreshed by the Mediterranean breeze. As autumn arrives, the valley continues to bask in summer-like conditions, maintaining extremely hot weather. Winters are notably mild, courtesy of the mountains enveloping the valley. Come spring, the valley transforms into a lush green haven, witnessing an increase in the waterfall's water volume, and a stream, unseen during the summer, starts flowing towards the sea.

Transportation to Butterfly Valley

There is no road transport available. However, for experienced mountain climbers, attempting to reach the Faralya neighborhood and descend to the valley is an option, though not recommended. The most convenient and commonly used mode of transportation to Butterfly Valley is by sea. The valley is merely 5 km away from Ölüdeniz Belcekız Beach, with boats departing multiple times daily. While boat tours are possible, they often introduce noise to the valley. To genuinely immerse yourself in nature, the sea, and the mountains, and fully appreciate Butterfly Valley, renting a yacht stands out as the optimal choice.
