Fethiye

Touch history at Fethiye Museum

In Fethiye, an extraordinary convergence of kingdoms, cultures, histories, and mythologies creates a unique geographical landscape. The Fethiye Museum holds a treasure trove of valuable artifacts waiting to be unearthed, representing this rich blend of influences.
Carians, Persians, Lycians, Seleucids, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and many more were the main actors of this rich geography in which Fethiye is located. In this small but rich museum, you learn the 5000 year story of the land you step on by living it.
Situated at the heart of Fethiye's city center, the Fethiye Museum beckons all who pass by to pause and explore its wonders. Even before stepping into the museum's garden, one is captivated by the anticipation of what lies within. From ancient lion sculptures dating back to BC times to stone olive oil mills, the treasures on display offer just a glimpse of the marvels awaiting inside. One might ponder whether these artifacts would be better preserved and showcased indoors rather than enduring the elements of sun, rain, and wind outside.

Upon entering, it becomes evident why such a relocation is not feasible ,the museum simply lacks the necessary space. Unlike the expansive Archaeology Museums in Izmir or Antalya, Fethiye Museum comprises only two main halls. The idea of transferring the artifacts from the garden indoors seems implausible unless the museum undergoes significant expansion.

Despite its modest size, the museum boasts an exceptionally wealth of content, derived from the historical abundance of Fethiye and its environs. Within its walls are showcased archaeological treasures unearthed from Dalaman, Fethiye, Ortaca, Köyceğiz, and Seydikemer regions. Dating back to 3000 BC, the museum's collection spans over 5000 years, encompassing artifacts from various eras until the late Ottoman period.

History of the museum

The inception of the Fethiye Museum traces back to the 1960s, spurred by the aftermath of the 1957 earthquake that devastated the region. As Fethiye underwent reconstruction, the idea emerged to consolidate historical ruins. In 1962, under the leadership of Recep Ceylan, the district governor at the time, these artifacts were gathered on land adjacent to the Ancient Telmessos Theater near Fethiye Harbor, initiating what began as an open-air museum. Evolving over time, the museum took its current form upon the inauguration of its permanent building on 505th Street in the Kesikkapı Neighborhood in 1987.

Some of the must-see monuments

The museum displays its artifacts in a chronological sequence, allowing visitors to journey through history. Among its exhibits are well-preserved sarcophagi, altars, and statues, including those depicting the esteemed Roman emperors Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. Additionally, visitors can admire statues representing Greek and Roman deities, votive offerings, dioskouroi, ornate golden crowns and bowls, ancient coins, busts, an array of statuettes and figurines spanning the Hellenic and Roman eras, as well as oil lamps and pottery.

However, the very special artifacts that you must see and that will take you to the realms of thought or imagination are as follows:

• The "Young Girl with a Dove" sculpture from the 2nd century AD
• The "Trilingual Inscription" (Greek, Lycian and Aramaic) that helped decipher the Lycian language
• "Bilingual Inscription" (Greek and Karca)
• "Izraza Monument" decorated with bas-reliefs
• "Carved wooden door" from the Ottoman period
• "St. Catherine's Ship's Head Ornament" found in the sea off the coast of Fethiye in 1967.
• "Kayaköy Church Gate"

Fethiye Museum, often overlooked, is a hidden treasure. As of the conclusion of 2023, visitors have the opportunity to view the artifacts displayed in the museum's garden, currently undergoing extensive restoration. Completion of the restoration is anticipated by summer 2024. However, it is advisable to contact the museum in advance to obtain updated information regarding access and availability.
