Climb Aya Yorgi on Buyukada!

The lush green trees and magnificent scenery you see while climbing the slope to Aya Yorgi will take all your tiredness away!
Aya Yorgi Church, located on the highest hill of Buyukada, the largest of Istanbul's Prince Islands, is one of the most preferred places by those who come to the island. It is equally enjoyable to climb Aya Yorgi, which local and foreign tourists do not return without seeing, with both the history of the church, its magnificent view and nature.

Where Buyukada is closest to the sky

The first construction date of the monastery is mentioned as 1751 in the sources. The small church, which was built as a small church, prayer place and chapel at this date, is the old church; The stone church, located behind the bell tower and built in 1905, is known as the new church.

Climbing the Aya Yorgi Monastery offers a great opportunity to see the breathtaking view that awaits you when you reach the top. The historical monastery is located on the 200-meter-high Yucetepe, the highest peak of the island. That's why many people choose this route for hiking and enjoying the magnificent scenery. As you start the climb, the beauties of Buyukada will welcome you. You will forget the difficulty of climbing, accompanied by lush trees and a unique sea view. Along the way, you can relax at many breaks and take great photos.

Visitors make wishes at Aya Yorgi

Aya Yorgi Church is one of the pilgrimage points in Christianity in Turkiye, along with the House of Virgin Mary in Ephesus. Especially on April 23 and September 24, there is an influx of visitors to the church. There is a belief that it is necessary to climb the hill with bare feet and without speaking on these two dates, which are important in Christianity. It is believed that after reaching the church in this way, the wishes will come true, and those who perform this ritual are considered semi-pilgrims. If you don't mind the crowds, we recommend that you visit the church on these special dates. If you want a quieter activity, days other than these dates will be suitable for you.

Visiting hours of Aya Yorgi Church
Aya Yorgi Church can be visited every day between 10:00 and 16:00. Tourist visitors are not accepted as there is a service on Sundays in the church, which does not have any entrance fee.

Whether you want to explore the history of the monastery or enjoy its breathtaking views, this climbing route awaits you. For those who love trekking and want to discover the beauties of Istanbul, this activity is truly an opportunity not to be missed!

There is also a shabby open-air restaurant with a 360-degree view at the back of the church. A glass of wine you will drink here will relieve all your tiredness and refresh your joy of life.
