History of Marmaris Castle

We reach the first information about the castle, which was built on the peninsula in the center of Marmaris, thanks to what Herodotus from Halicarnassus gave. Herodotus wrote that the first walls of the city were built in 3,000 BC. Later, the castle was repaired during the Ionian period. The next major repair was made by Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia, after he conquered Marmaris. During the Ottoman period of Marmaris, Suleiman the Magnificent had Marmaris Castle rebuilt, which he would use as a base to embark on the Rhodes expedition. The castle, which was hit by artillery shells by French warships during the First World War, was later repaired and the people of Marmaris were settled in this castle until the 1980s.
