Gocek

History

At the center of civilization in every period of history…
The history of Gocek, a neighborhood of Fethiye district, should be considered together with the history of Fethiye. Nevertheless, let's share with you what is known about Gocek and its surroundings as far as it is available in various sources.
The earliest known names of Gocek in the prehistoric period were Hyparna, Daydala (Daidala) and Kalimce (Kalimche). Although its borders at that time and today's borders differed, Gocek was located between the Carian city of Kaunos and the Lycian city of Telmessos - Dalyan and Fethiye, respectively.

Gocek, whose history dates back to the 14th century BC, has many settlement ruins, rock tombs, mausoleums and bath-like structures belonging to the Lycian civilization. Since the center of Kalimche city could not be determined exactly, archaeological studies are not carried out in the region. However, the underwater ruins, which are thought to belong to Kalimce, can be clearly seen 50 meters away from Gocek. Gocek, which was used as a port by ships carrying chrome ores extracted from the mines in the surrounding mountains during the Ottoman period, has many structures belonging to the Roman and Byzantine periods as well as the Ottoman Empire.

Perhaps the most famous legend in human history is in Gocek

In addition to its historical structures, Gocek is also rich with legends. The most famous among these legends is the Legend of Icarus: Athenian inventor Daidalus and his son Icarus (Icarus) were punished by King Minos and locked in a tower. Daidalus uses beeswax and the feathers of the birds that come to the tower to make a pair of wings for his son to fly to his freedom from the window of the tower and warns him not to fly towards the sun. Young Icarus does not listen to his father, he flaps his wings towards the sun with the happiness and excitement of flying. Icarus, whose wax wings melted, fell into the sea and died.
